Camp STAR is a grief camp designed for children ages 8-17 who have experienced the unfortunate death of a parent, friend, or loved one. It is sponsored by STAR Children’s Bereavement Services and is a weekend long camp filled with traditional, fun, camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support.

All camp activities are facilitated by caring, trained professionals, and volunteers. Each camper is assigned a camp buddy, who is a specially trained mentor that provides one-on-one companionship throughout the weekend. Camp Buddies are young adults ages 18 to 25.

Camp STAR will be held August 9 – 11, 2024 at Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay, Michigan.

Acceptance

Campers realize they are not alone in their grief and can be around a group of people and peers for a weekend, who can understand what they’re going through.

Art Therapy

Art therapy provides a healthy and safe outlet for children to share their grief and talk about their healing process through visual creation.

Guilt-Free Fun

This is achieved when the campers see that they can miss their loved one and talk about their grief, but also turn around and enjoy a fun camp activity. Providing a space where they can grieve without guilt, helps to normalize their feelings.

Camp STAR is operated by STAR Children’s Bereavement Services, a non-profit organization.
